The peer-reviewed journal of Art Education Australia (AEA)

AUSTRALIAN ART EDUCATION seeks to:

 

Publish high quality, peer-reviewed articles in the field of art and art education.

  • Serve the community of artists and art educators nationally and internationally, by publishing significant opinion and research into historical, theoretical, and philosophical issues in art and art education.

  • Publish articles exploring the K-12, tertiary and industry art sectors which encourage scholarly debate and dialogue.

  • Promote the value of art in ways that reflect the transformational purpose of education.

Manuscripts that deal with significant art education topics from the early childhood, primary, secondary and tertiary sectors are welcome, as are contributions from people working in art forms such as but not limited to: ceramics, drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, design, crafts, photography, video, filmmaking, and architecture. 

Articles are refereed through a double blind peer review process. 

The journal will not publish purely descriptive accounts of data collection or uncritical reports of teaching and course delivery methods.

Editorial Policy

 Peer Review

Australian Art Education provides a strictly anonymous double blind peer review process. Authors should ensure they cannot be identified in text references, citations or through institutional affiliation.

Authorship

Each person who has made a substantive contribution to the article should be listed as an author. Principal authorship and authorship order should be based on the professional contribution of the people involved, regardless of their status. For example an article based on a student’s dissertation or thesis should have the student listed as the principal author.

 

ORCID

As part of the editorial board’s commitment to ensuring an ethical, transparent and fair peer review process Art Education Australia supports the use of ORCID, the Open Researcher and Contributor ID. ORCID provides a persistent digital identifier that distinguishes researchers. We encourage all authors to add their ORCID to the title page of their submission. Acknowledgments

All contributors who do not meet the criteria for authorship should be listed in an Acknowledgments section at the end of the article. This could include people who provided technical or editorial support. Please ensure any personal acknowledgments are provided separately to the main text in order to meet the requirements for anonymous peer review.

 

Ethical Clearance

All authors should ensure they have received appropriate ethical clearance where relevant for their research. This includes data gathered from human participants such, as but not limited to interviews, images, and surveys. For Australian authors please refer to the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research which is available online. 

 

Funding

Australian Art Education requires all authors to acknowledge any funding for their research under a separate heading at the end of their article. Otherwise a statement should be provided to the effect that the research has not received specific funding from any agency in the public, commercial, or not-for-profit sectors.

 

Declaration of conflicting interests

Art Education Australia encourages authors to reveal any conflicting interests in relation to their article.

 

Publication Ethics

Art Education Australia take issues of copyright infringement, plagiarism or breaches of best practice in research and publication very seriously. As part of this practice we seek to protect the rights of our authors and investigate claims of plagiarism or misuse of published articles. Additionally, we seek to protect the reputation of the Art Education Journal against malpractice. For this reason submitted articles may be checked with plagiarism detection software. If an article is found to consist of plagiarised content or includes third-party copyright material without permission and due acknowledgement, or where the authorship of the article is contested, we may take the following actions but not limited to: publishing an erratum or correction; retracting the article; taking up the matter with the relevant institution or society; or taking appropriate legal action.

Copyright

Before publication, authors are requested to assign copyright to the Journal subject to their retaining their right to reuse the material in other publications written or edited by themselves and due to be published at least one year after initial publication in Australian Art Education. Authors retain copyright of their article but should seek permission from the current Editor to republish the article elsewhere or in another form. Where a paper is reprinted, appropriate reference must be given to Australian Art Education. Authors seeking permission, or who have questions about their article’s use, should contact the Editor.

Author Guidelines

Two versions of the manuscript, one identified and one de-identified, must be submitted in English electronically as a Word document via an email attachment. In your email please include a statement which confirms that the manuscript has neither been published nor submitted for simultaneous consideration elsewhere.

Identified Manuscript

 The identified manuscript should have a cover page with the following:

  • title of the paper

  • author/s details: full name/s, titles

  • physical address/es

  • email address/es

  • business phone number/s of author/s

  • institutional or organisation affiliation.

 De-identified Manuscript

The de-identified manuscript should include only the title of the article on the cover page with no identifying information about the authors throughout the manuscript, including the reference list. This is to facilitate the peer blind review process.

 Include an abstract (75 – 100 words) and a brief bio/s of each author (75 – 100 words). Articles should not exceed 5,000 words including references.

 STYLE GUIDE

Authors should use the author-date system and consult the current APA Style (American Psychological Association). Please see the following link for further information about APA Referencing: https://www.usq.edu.au/library/referencing/apa-referencing-guide

You must use Times or Times New Roman 12 point and the article should be double-spaced at this stage. Tables and figures should be referred to in the text but appear at the end of the manuscript after the reference list. Footnotes should not be used. Endnotes are accepted. Please send all images separately as high-resolution jpg files (minimum 300dpi) and include captions. It is the author’s responsibility to ensure copyright permissions are obtained.

 Authors must strictly adhere to the Australian Art Education guidelines in order for their article to be accepted into the double blind peer review process.

REVIEW PROCESS

Each submitted paper will be double blind peer reviewed. The reviewers will be asked to comment on the significance and appropriateness of the paper, the quality of the research and the writing. At this stage you may receive the following: Accept, Accept with Minor Revisions, Accept with Major Revisions, or Reject.

If your paper is accepted and you have revisions to make you should carefully respond to the reviewers’ feedback and include a tracked change copy to indicate your changes and a clean copy with the changes included. In addition, please submit a table which contains a summary of the reviewers’ feedback and how you have attended to it. Include the page numbers of the tracked change document to indicate where the changes have been made in the table.

If your paper is accepted for publication, you will be notified and you will receive marked up copies of your paper and a copy of the Australian Art Education Style Guidelines. You will have up to three weeks to make final corrections and return your copy prepared for publication. If the guidelines are not followed it will delay and possibly prevent the publishing of the manuscript. The Editor reserves the right to amend articles to ensure consistency of style and appropriate length.

Issues of Australian Art Education: the Journal of Art Education Australia from the current year are available to members to download as PDFs. The free Acrobat Reader is required to view these files. To access these issues, AEA members can log in via the login panel at the top right of this page.
